AGS Symposium
April 20, 2018 UCI Student Center Woods Cove Presenter: Yenda Prado Title: Tool of Empowerment: Using Digital Text Scaffolding to Promote Positive Literacy Attitudes in Struggling and Reluctant Readers Abstract Affective dimensions of reading, such as reading attitudes and beliefs, have been relatively understudied, despite evidence suggesting their importance to the development of positive academic reading outcomes. In this talk, I explore ways in which struggling and reluctant readers can leverage Visual Syntactic Text Formatting (VSTF), a low-cost digital text scaffolding tool, to achieve their personal literacy goals and partake in positive literacy practices. I will discuss how features unique to VSTF provide important scaffolds which empower struggling and reluctant readers to engage with texts they might have previously avoided in traditional formats.
