Title: Tool of Empowerment: Using Digital Text Scaffolding to Promote Positive Literacy Attitudes in Struggling and Reluctant Readers
 
Abstract

​Affective dimensions of reading, such as reading attitudes and beliefs, have been relatively understudied, despite evidence suggesting their importance to the development of positive academic reading outcomes. In this talk, I explore ways in which struggling and reluctant readers can leverage Visual Syntactic Text Formatting (VSTF), a low-cost digital text scaffolding tool, to achieve their personal literacy goals and partake in positive literacy practices. I will discuss how features unique to VSTF provide important scaffolds which empower struggling and reluctant readers to engage with texts they might have previously avoided in traditional formats.
