Professor named editor-in-chief of Scientific Studies of Reading

8/11/2020

The Scientific Studies of Reading named Professor and Sr. Associate Dean Young-Suk Kim (right) its editor-in-chief. Kim will begin her three-year appointment on March 1, 2021.

Scientific Studies of Reading, a specialty journal focusing on literacy, is considered one of the leading journals in the field and is the flagship journal of the Society for Scientific Studies of Reading.

“Editorship is a vital part of the academic and science community and beyond,” Kim said. “I look forward to working with a team of associate editors and editorial board members to promote science, significance, and relevance of the journal to a wide range of audiences on the topic of literacy.”

Kim’s research foci include reading comprehension; reading fluency; listening comprehension; academic language; and writing for children from diverse backgrounds such as English-speaking children, English learners, and children learning to read other languages (Korean, Spanish, and Chinese).

Kim directs the Language, Literacy, and Learning (L3) Lab. Her work has been supported by the Institute of Education Science, the U S. Department of Education, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

“My goal for the journal is to continue to solidify its leading impact and to contribute to the best science in the field of literacy, and to enhance dissemination to diverse audiences,” Kim said.

Kim served as a reviewer for the journal and as a historian for the Society for the Scientific Studies of Reading. She also served as an associate editor for the flagship journal of the American Psychological Association, the Journal of Educational Psychology, for the past eight years.
