Megan Broad: Laura E. Settle Scholarship

11/13/2018

Megan Broad has been awarded the Laura E. Settle Scholarship during the UCI School of Education 2018-2019 Scholarship Award Ceremony.  Megan is pursuing her Single Subject Master of Arts in Teaching in Science. She shares the following thoughts about her academic journey.

November 2018

I am a future science educator in the Master of Arts and Credentialing Program at the University of California, Irvine, currently student teaching at Rancho Alamitos High School in Garden Grove. An alumna of Orange County School of the Arts, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Justice from American University in Washington, D.C.

I have passions in many fields, from social justice to STEM and art education, and I am continually finding ways to blend my talents with my passions. My diverse experiences include volunteering in agricultural education in Massachusetts and Arkansas, encouraging the success of English Language Learners through mentorship and volunteer tutoring, supporting the needs of students with disabilities, and introducing children to visual arts and the creative process.

This scholarship is allowing me to focus on my classes and helping  students, classmates, and the community. The scholarship makes it possible for
me to reach my goals of maximizing student potential and helping others become successful through education. I am inspired by Laura Settle and her vision of a strong community of teachers, joining together in our careers and beyond, to uphold the great profession of teaching.
