The School of Education is welcoming four new Senate faculty members: Elizabeth Peña, Shanyce Campbell, Brandy Gatlin, and Shane Goodridge.
Elizabeth Peña, Professor Research Interests: Bilingualism, Language Impairment, Test Development & Treatment Professor Elizabeth Peña joins UCI from the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas-Austin, where she was the George Christian Centennial Professor in Communications. She is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and a Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association. Peña’s research focuses on the goal of differentiating language impairment from language difference. These interrelated areas include dynamic assessment, semantic development in bilinguals, and child language impairment. Shanyce L. Campbell, Assistant Professor Research Interests: Educational Inequity, K-12 Education Policy, Teacher Preparation & Effectiveness Assistant Professor Shanyce L. Campbell is joining UCI from her postdoctoral research position at the University of Michigan School of Education. Campbell studies how policies and practices influence access to quality learning opportunities for marginalized student populations. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, she explores three institutional factors associated with advancing opportunities to learn – instructional quality, school-community partnerships, and curriculum. Brandy Gatlin, Assistant Professor Research Interests: Achievement Gap, Culture & Learning, Diversity & Equity, Language & Literacy Acquisition & Instruction, Learning Disabilities, Linguistic Diversity, Race & Urban Education, Teacher Education, Writing Assistant Professor Brandy Gatlin joins UCI from her postdoctoral position in the Urban Child Study Center at Georgia State University. Her research focuses on the relations between language and literacy development for children from culturally and linguistically diverse groups, especially those from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds. A former special education teacher, Gatlin has engaged in a variety of teaching and research experiences, including studies in the Multidisciplinary Learning Disabilities Center at the Florida Center for Reading Research. Shane Goodridge, Lecturer SOE Research Interests: Educational History, Philosophy, the Charter School Movement Dr. Goodridge joins UCI's School of Education from his previous position as Assistant Dean, Trinity College, Duke University. He has taught in public and private schools in Canada, the U.S., and the United Kingdom. He is an educational historian interested in how broad shifts in the American narrative have influenced the creation and implementation of education policy at both the state and federal levels.
