On July 28, UCI's Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP) congratulated 120 students from Santa Ana and Rio Honda Colleges who have completed CFEP's Summer Scholars Transfer Institute (SSTI) program. Now in its 26th year, SSTI is an intensive 10-day residential summer institute at UCI designed to prepare historically underrepresented students in higher education for transfer to the UC system. The program offers the community college students a core academic transfer course for three units of academic UC transferable credit. Students accepted into the program are taught by instructional teams composed of UCI and Community College faculty, with a counselor and teaching assistants providing classroom support. During their 10 days living, eating, sleeping, and studying at the UCI campus, SSTI students are helped to focus on their educational goals by faculty, partnership staff, and student networks. The goal is to nourish a positive college going culture. Parents, relatives, friends, faculty, staff, UCI students, and community members attended the graduation ceremonies on Sunday, July 28. Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Educational Partnerships, opened the ceremonies by welcoming the scholars and their guests. The program agenda included the following: Lisa Chavez, Dean of Counseling at Rio Hondo College, offered words of congratulations to the graduates and their family members. Class Speakers, introduced by Vanessa Orozco-Martinez and Jose Lara, included the following:
Certificates of program completion were presented for Earth Science by Professor Claire Coyne and Counselor Martha Vargas, for English by Matthew Beyersdorf and Counselor Rochelle Polanco-Zook, for Sociology by Melissa Rifino-Juarez and Counselor Diana Valladares, and for Speech by Professor Casey Jones ad Counselor Jose Lara.
