Doctoral student awarded Public Impact Fellowship
UCI Graduate Division named UCI School of Education doctoral student Renzhe Yu a 2021-22 Public Impact Fellow.
Yu is one of 14 graduate students university-wide to receive the honor. Public Impact Fellows highlight and support Ph.D. or MFA students whose current research has the potential for substantial impact in the public sphere. As part of his research, Yu develops large-scale behavioral data analytics to support the success and well-being of college students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. In collaboration with minority-serving two- and four-year institutions nationwide, Yu investigates campus-wide behavioral traces in learning management systems in order to understand and support online learning while unveiling and mitigating the development of inequalities. |
Moving forward, Yu plans to generate reports for institutional administrations that document aggregated analytical insights about students' learning experience, and run field interventions to examine the utility of real-time behavioral analytics to improve the targeting of instructional and institutional support for students in need.
“Because these institutions are especially resource constrained and in dire need of data-informed decision making, my research will immediately benefit over 300,000 students currently enrolled,” Yu said. “My research will establish standard pipelines for analyzing system-wide behavioral trace data for the next generation of higher education research and practice. With the long-term disruptive effects of the pandemic, such data analytics become more necessary than ever for identifying critical moments of action and improving the targeting of student support resources.”
“Renzhe uses highly innovative analytics methods to illuminate college students' experiences and trajectories and identify ways to help diverse learners succeed,” said Yu’s advisor, Professor Mark Warschauer. “His work is on the cutting edge of data science for social good.”
Yu will receive $1,000 to support his research and will have the opportunity to participate in Grad Advocacy Day in Sacramento to represent UCI and interact with legislators.
UCI Graduate Division also named School of Education doctoral students Dandan Yang a Public Impact Distinguished Fellow and Hye Rin Lee a Public Impact Fellow. For a full list of awardees, please click here.
