MAT Application Information
Subject Matter Requirement – Coursework

Students will have the option to meet the Subject Matter Requirement by completing coursework addressing all of the domains for each specific subject.

If you are applying to UC Irvine’s MAT program and intend to use coursework to satisfy the Subject Matter Requirement, please review the Subject Matter Requirement worksheet for your subject area below to determine if you may qualify for this waiver. Please note that this is for self-evaluation purposes only. For coursework to meet the Subject Matter Competency Requirement, it must meet all of the content listed under the domains. If any domain is not met with confidence, you are encouraged to schedule and pass the CSET.

Multiple Subject - CSET or Academic Major only

We are currently not doing coursework evaluations for the Multiple Subject Subject Matter requirement. Subject Matter Competency can be met through having a B.A. in Liberal Studies or through taking the CSETs for Multiple Subject.

Uploading Worksheet to Online Application

You may upload the PDF of the completed Subject Matter Evaluation to your online application if you have met the Subject Matter Requirement through coursework. Please note that we will not be able to formally evaluate the Subject Matter worksheet during the admissions process. Evaluations are done if and when an applicant is admitted and  they submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) into the MAT program.

If any domain is not with confidence, it is highly recommended to take the CSET exam in your desired subject area.

Subject Matter Evaluations from a Commission Approved Programs:

If you believe you have met the Subject Matter Requirement through coursework AND would like a formal evaluation to be completed, please contact a commission approved program that has an Subject Matter Evaluations process in place.

Please provide us with an original letter, on official letterhead from the Commission Approved Program, signed by an Authorized Designee, which verifies that the applicant satisfied Subject Matter Competency through coursework evaluation conducted by the program.

CSULB provides this service at a cost of $50 per evaluation and will take approximately 6-8 weeks for processing. Please see their website for more information.
