Biography
Dr. Jody Guarino is a former National Board Certified Teacher with an Early Childhood Generalist Certificate who has a passion for connecting research to practice. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) from Azusa Pacific University, a Master of Science Degree (M.S.) in Education from California State University at Fullerton, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) in Communications and Sociology from the University of Southern California.
Interested in teacher and student learning, Dr. Guarino has spent more than twenty years in education, working with early childhood through graduate students. She has been a classroom teacher, district mentor, teacher on special assignment, and administrator. Working at district, state, and national levels, Dr. Guarino has developed and implemented research-based professional learning with preservice and inservice teachers across the country. She has been involved in several research projects, understanding how teachers can learn to learn from mathematics teaching, investigating the use of video to support teacher learning, understanding the affordances of paired-collaborative clinical placements, and exploring professional learning that supports discourse and argumentation in elementary classrooms.
Currently a mathematics coordinator at Orange County Department of Education, Dr. Guarino considers teaching and learning central to all of her work. She believes children are sense makers and bring intuitive knowledge to their classrooms. Through the development of content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, knowledge for teaching, and understanding student thinking, her goal is for all students to be mathematically proficient. Dr. Guarino works with teachers and districts across the Orange County and national organizations including Student Achievement Partners, Illustrative Mathematics, Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, and New Leaders.
Since joining UCI in 2005, Dr. Guarino has taught courses in the multiple subject and secondary programs, supervised student teachers, and been a mentor teacher, experiencing many facets of the Master of Arts in Teaching program through multiple perspectives. In addition to teaching courses in the classroom and teaching methods strand, she also teaches the complete sequence in the research and inquiry strand, supporting candidates to become teacher leaders who can understand and solve problems of practice. Interested in equity and teacher learning, she collaborates with teacher educators across a variety of settings to understand and support the specialized content knowledge (SCK) needed for teaching.
