UCI Writing Project workshop tackles ways to prepare students for success in digital age

1/23/2020

(Irvine, January 23, 2020) - More than 75 educators from Southern California attended the second workshop in the UCI Writing Project's 2019-20 series, "Research-Based Strategies to Enhance Learning for All Students."

The interactive workshop, titled "Transforming Learning: Preparing Students for Success in the Digital Age by Promoting Digital Citizenship, Critical Thinking, and Social Emotional Intelligence," featured Alan November, co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership (pictured left).

“It was an honor to host Alan November as part of our Research-Based Strategies workshop series,” said Professor Carol Booth Olson. “The UCI Writing Project prides itself on hosting leading experts that provide accessible, practical skills that teachers can immediately take back to their classrooms. November is a perfect example of such an expert."

November's presentation covered seven topics:
  • Six keys to transform learning
  • Teaching critical thinking on the web
  • The role of social emotional intelligence in digital citizenship
  • Using tools to make thinking visible and collaborative
  • Students as problem designers and creative questioners
  • Building a global network for student work
  • Peer learning strategies

To illustrate his concepts, November used video clips and personal experience, interspersed with time for whole group and small group discussion.

The workshop design encouraged participants to apply transforming learning design principles to their own classroom practices. Attendees received a copy of November's best-selling book Who Owns the Learning?, which was on the New York Times education best seller list for 2013.
